Points on work trips.

Who pays, who keeps the miles, and what the company and the booking tool pay on top.

On a work trip, three things can earn: your own frequent flyer account (the miles are yours), the company's airline program if it's enrolled (bluebiz pays about 3% of the fare back), and sometimes the booking tool (Navan Rewards pays you credit for booking a cheaper hotel). If the company pays cash, book cash and keep your points.

Questions

Can I keep the miles from a business trip?

Usually yes: the miles go to the frequent flyer number on the ticket, which is yours. Company policies differ, and some countries tax miles above a limit (Germany above €1,080 a year, paid by the program). The company can earn on the same ticket through its own program.

Should I use my own points when the company pays?

Usually not. The cash fare costs you nothing and earns you miles; spending your points only saves the company money, unless it pays you back for them.

What is Navan Rewards?

Credit Navan pays you for booking a hotel below its "Price to Beat", spendable on personal Navan hotel stays and valid 12 months. Cheaper rates can earn no hotel points, so compare.

Which programs pay the company?

Air France-KLM bluebiz (about 3% of the fare back), Lufthansa Group PartnerPlusBenefit and BA, Iberia and American On Business. All are free to join, and travellers still earn their own miles.
