TravelBank Rewards or hotel points?

Your company may pay you part of what you save on a hotel. Here is what it pays, and what the cheaper rate can cost you in points.

TravelBank Rewards gives you 20-50% of what you save below TravelBank's benchmark price (your company picks the share and pays for it), as points for gift cards like Uber, Lyft, Airbnb and Amazon. The catch: most prepaid contract rates earn no hotel points or elite nights, so compare the reward with the points you would give up.

The trade-off: gift cards or hotel points

The cheap rates that earn the reward are often the ones that earn no hotel points.

TravelBank reward = your company's share (20-50%) × (benchmark − the price you book). At 50%, a $200 room against a $300 benchmark pays $50 in gift card points.

Chain rate = points earned × what a point is worth (see hotel points: about 0.75¢ for Marriott, 0.4¢ for Hilton, 1.65¢ for Hyatt), plus the elite night if you are chasing status.

Only on rooms tagged 'Hotel Loyalty Points' (filter: 'Rewards and Loyalty'). TravelBank says 'the majority of prepaid contract room rates do not qualify' for hotel loyalty. Loyalty numbers in your traveler profile are added to your reservations. TravelBank doesn't say whether one room can earn both its reward and hotel points.

Ask Mila with both prices and she works it out.

Tax

What TravelBank claims, and what we found.

TravelBank's marketing says 'Tax-free Rewards'. We found no tax authority that says so: in the US, employer-funded gift cards are generally taxable. Ask your payroll team before you count on it.

Digital gift cards for yourself or as a gift: Uber (also Uber Eats), Lyft, Airbnb, Amazon and more. About 100 points to $1 (10,000 points for a $100 gift card), plus 250 points per redemption. Points expire if you neither earn nor redeem any for 18 months.
